So, the other day I was at Target, and I saw that Left 4 Dead 2 was out, and as I really enjoyed the first one, I figured what the heck. So, I gave it a spin last night (hey, if you’re going to play a zombie shooter, do it at night)…and I was throughly unimpressed. Gameplay wise, it’s the same great Left 4 Dead…my issue is that there is NOTHING in the game that I feel you can call it a “sequel” NONE…why they couldn’t have just released it as DLC (I would have paid) is totally beyond me. Here are some other quick thoughts:
1. Graphics are more or less the same, which is to say they are good.
2. Gun’s don’t seem to have enough ammo compared to the first game.
3. Characters are cool…better than the first one.
4. Disappointed you are still limited to 1 main gun, and 1 off-hand (unlimited ammo handgun/melee weapon)…even though in the cutscenes, you can CLEARLY see that one of the characters has 1 melee weapon, and TWO main guns (machine gun and a shotgun). I understand that they want realism, I understand that “classic” FPS (Doom, Quake, Half-Life, etc) was not very realistic to carry 9 weapons (chainsaw, handgun, machine gun, rocket launcher, stinger missile, m1a1 battle tank, etc). But, it’s VERY doable to carry 2 weapons…
[Update]: So, my father who did several tours in Vietnam informs me that in fact 2 “main weapons” would be a bad idea. Fair enough. Still, if I had to shoot my way through a zombie horde, I might consider taking more than 1 main weapon (at least have the option).
5. Zombies have gotten more powerful, yet the gun selection has stayed the same. Meh.
That’s it in a nutshell.
Quick Summary: If you’ve got a few extra bucks to spare, get the game…but, if you’re on the fence; don’t bother.
