Yet again I have undertaken the task of switching cell phones. It seems to be a bi-monthly office ritual now, one day every two month I wait impatiently in the office lobby for UPS or FedEx to arrive with my new cell phone. Everyone knows to just come to the lobby to talk or whatever, and once it gets here people avoid my office for 30 minutes as I play with my new toy.
Anyway, this cycles device is the T-Mobile myTouch 3G. I have been using the iPhone 3Gs, and while it’s a solid phone, I have a few issues with it (the major ones, in no particular order are):
1. The App Store: While it has 50k apps… 1/3 of them are stupid $0.99 apps meant to slap something together and try to make a quick buck, 1/3 of them are just useless (iFart…come on, really?), and the rest are solid. Also, I think that the duplicating functionality is not a bad thing…want your “included” app to be the one everyone uses…make it the best…put in features people want. The App Store needs to have set (and POSTED) policies and stick to them, and “duplicate functionality” should NOT be one of them.
3. AT&T: Do I really need to drop 1 out of 4 calls? Do you know how irritating it is to make a call to a line line phone with 4 – 5 bars then DROP the call? What’s the point of having 3G when I get EDGE speeds? Lastly no tethering and no MMS. We all know why you can’t do it now…because if you could, it would CRUSH AT&T’s network…you think it’s bad now.
Anyway, if you are looking for a “well rounded” and “un-boxing” review, this isn’t it. I’m a hard core cell user, and I will be comparing it with the iPhone 3Gs and the BlackBerry Bold/Tour. Here goes…
The Good:
Lots of GREAT apps in the Android Market, there really are a lot of quality apps in the Android market place.
Great integration with Google Apps. Google Apps is becoming *the* alternative to Exchange, and this phone integrates amazingly well with it. Also, though not really Google Apps, is Google Voice…it is amazing how it works with Android and integrates with it.
Customization. Wow. Coming from an iPhone / BB this is a huge plus, the way that Apps can integrate with the phone is great. For example, Google Voice, you can set the phone to auto-call out with Google Voice and you will never know…you can use the built in dialer and it just works.
Size: A little thinner and a little thicker than the iPhone, it feels more like a “candy bar phone”), but it feels good. A lot better than the G1.
