What a nightmare!
Holy freaking crap!! This day has been an apple nightmare for me.
I pre-ordered Leopard so I could get it today, shipped FedEx Priority Overnight (so it could get here before 10:30am, so I didn’t need to wait all day). Well, 10:50 came around, no package. Huh? I called FedEx and they said (paraphrased) that there was no way they could get it to me before 10:30a so they just decided to “disregard” that and deliver it when they could. Bummer. However, it literally got here a few minutes later. Yeah!
I put the CD in my Mac mini, and started the upgrade. It rebooted, and prompted me to “Check the disk”, I declided that seeing that I figured it wasn’t a burned download, and that it would be fine. The install proceeded, albeit slow (2 hours 40 minutes), but it finished, the computer rebooted, and I was in buisness. Everything seemed fine, the spinning pinwheel kept popping up, but nonetheless, working.
So, eager to start using Time Machine, I plugged in my Firewire backup drive, and it stated that there wasn’t enough room. That made sense, so I decided the upgrade went well, and I didn’t want/need the old backups, so I deleted the contents of the drive and started the Time Machine backup. Again, more pinwheel love…so, I decided to reboot the computer.
Then IT happened…as it was rebooting I stepped away for a quick break, and when I got back I saw it had booted off the CD and was in the setup screen. Strange. So, I popped the CD out and rebooted. Nothing. I put the CD back in, when to Disk Utility and then I saw it. Somehow, my partition info was totally lost. FUCK!!!!! I tried to repair several times, and no luck.
Well, I called Apple support…useless. The person couldn’t even understand the sequence of events. I hung up, and came to the realization that all was lost. Fix the damn partition, and move on with life. I got the disk back in a usable state, and started the install. Nada. No worky. I called Apple support again, and got someone who had half a brain, he stated that lots of CD that got shipped out were corrupted, and it would have been better if I had run the check. Crap. He said I could go to the Apple store to get a swap. Perfect. I tried a few more times just to be sure.
I headed out, and enjoyed the festivities (and got a cool t-shirt)…swapped out my copy and picked up another (as I needed more licenses). I got home…went though the motions, and the install failed 90% though (some bullshit about EpsonPrinterDrivers) FUCK!!! Ok…did a disk repair, and reinstall. Worked!! WooHoo. It started to boot…and froze. Stopped dead in it’s tracks. I tried to reboot with the CD to get back into the installer…nope. Totally bricked! Fuck!!
Well, I’m going to the Apple store tomorrow just drop off my mini and just tell them to fix it. I really hate Apple some times.
